A study on the
\neconomic impact of the yachting industry in Fiji has revealed the tourism
\nside-industry contributes about US$30 million to the country\u2019s economy
\nannually. <\/p>\n

The study stated that,
\nsignificantly, while yachting tourism doesn\u2019t boast large numbers of arrivals,
\ncruising is one of the \u201chighest yielding tourism segments with annual average
\nspending for each visitor per trip of $3,094 compared with the national average
\nof $971.\u201d<\/p>\n

The study was
\ndeveloped in partnership with Fiji\u2019s Port Denarau Marina, Vuda Marina and the
\nAustralian-funded Market Development Facility and produced by the consultancy
\nfirm AMSTEC. The study\u2019s results were discussed at a national yachting
\nstakeholders meeting held in November in Nadi.<\/p>\n

Representatives of
\nMajuro\u2019s Mieco Beach Yacht Club have long believed that the cruising industry
\nis one of the biggest tourism earners for the Marshall Islands, but many people
\noverlook cruisers as being beneficial to the economy because they don\u2019t stay in
\nhotels like \u201ctraditional\u201d tourists. <\/p>\n

The Fiji study stated
\nthat in 2018, 714 yachts visited Fiji. This included a relatively large number
\nof superyachts, with each visit by a superyacht generating $78,490, adding $3.7
\nmillion to the 2018 total of $30 million. It explained that \u201cwhile yachting
\ntourism does not boast the large numbers of arrivals, with only 4,330 crew and
\nguests arriving on 714 yachts in 2018, it is one of the highest yielding
\ntourism segments.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to the
\nstudy, \u201cthe economic contribution by the sector is even more pronounced when
\none considers that yachts sail to many remote islands within the Fiji group
\nthat tourists do not travel to and \u2018yachties\u2019 tend to spend more on locally
\nsourced food, supplies and repairs.\u201d This is mirrored in the Marshall Islands,
\nwith a majority of yachts spending a significant amount of their time in RMI in
\nthe outer islands.<\/p>\n

Cynthia Rasch, general
\nmanager of the Port Denarau marina \u2014 one of the largest marinas in Fiji \u2014 said
\nthe \u201cyachting industry plays a vital role to the growth of Fiji\u2019s economy and
\nthis study will quantify their economic, employment, social and environmental
\ncontributions to the local communities.\u201d<\/p>\n

Adam Wade, general manager
\nof Vuda Marina echoed Rasch\u2019s comments: \u201cMany people are unaware of the diverse
\nnature of the yachting industry and how there are numerous businesses that have
\nbeen created organically to meet the needs of this vibrant and emerging
\ncommunity of adventurous travelers.\u201d<\/p>\n
